Poetry

Still as a statue, in the shade I lie.
To the top of the sky, song birds fly.
On top of trees, singing their melodies.
How nice they are, flying with the stars.
Feathers flap, some dive,
like swimming in air, they're so alive.

Lola, age 10, USA

One day.
I will be a dog egg.
With the dew of dapple vases.
The wind messing my hair.
I will balance.
And run free.
Because I am.
Meeeeeeeee.

Anandhi, age 7, South Africa

Ties that bind me, that leave me lonely and unsure of how I feel,
if you could only see how I'm falling and how what you say makes me feel sometimes.
I'm falling into a dark abyss, I can't seem to pull myself out of.
Need you now, can you see that now?

Melody, age 16, USA

It starts as a worm, that's crawling around
Then spins into a little, silky cage
Soon out it comes in a fluttering bound
It's wings flap back and forth like a book's page

As it started to lift, it looked small and weak
It didn't seem brave, I must have been wrong
For it faced its head at the mountain's peaks
And its wings were beating glorious songs

Flying with such little effort at all
With patterns like stars in the midnight sky
Gorgeous wings spread, there was no point to crawl
It flew off its branch as I waved goodbye

Oh butterfly, you fill me with great joy,
Now tell me, are you a girl or a boy?

Lauren, age 10, USA

Pudding here,
pudding there,
pudding is everywhere.
Pudding is so sweet,
pudding is my favorite treat.

Nico, age 5, USA

Books mean a lot.
They let you imagine and picture the things.
I love books.
Don't you?

Anandhi, age 7, South Africa

Love

Love is nice!
Love is not rude
or crude.
Love is sweet
and always neat.

Love is joy!
Love is not a toy
Though it may live
with in a toy love is
not a toy.

Love is happy!

Faith, age 19, USA

I sit and watch leaves fall low
and wait for summer to slowly creep up.

Brittney, age 11, USA

Friends are forever.
Friends make you smile.
They will pick you up when you are down.
That's what friends are for.

Faith, age 19, America

What Makes Me, Me

What makes me, me
Is a long explanation, so sit for tea
Yes, it's a long story
But I'll explain in great glory
I'm full of characteristics of my own
Characteristics of others, far away they are thrown
With a smile of mine
Brighter than the sun it shines
Every thought and idea, they are also mine
Arranged neatly, neatly as a spine
What others think I don't care
Oh and I have a temper that just might flare
I love to think
Those ideas and wonders of mine just won't shrink
I am happy to be who I am
No, I don't want to be like Pam
This is what makes me, me
If you don't like it than flee

Carmeneisha, age 14, USA
